Esperanza’s father was a wealthy land owner in Mexico, but when he was killed by bandits, her scheming uncle took over their farm. Esperanza was sent across the border to California to find a place with family there. Not used to the hard life of migrant workers, Esperanza was desperately miserable. She eventually found her footing and discovered a skill at babysitting, which earned her some extra money. Though she was faced with setbacks, the young girl’s determination and blossoming spirit helped her thrive in her new home.
