Bio
Janet Stanford has served as Artistic Director of Imagination Stage in Bethesda MD for over three decades. She has transitioned the company from a community-based arts organization to a nationally significant regional TYA theatre and arts education program, dedicated to youth development. In addition to commissioning dozens of US and international playwrights, Janet has written several musicals for Grades 1-5 and plays for the Very Young. These include Aladdin’s Luck and Sleeping Beauty: Time Traveler. Collaborations with The Washington Ballet led to two highly acclaimed Dance Theatre Musical adaptations: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe, and The Little Mermaid. Most recently, Janet worked with composer Timothy Guillot on Dickens’s Davy Copperfield, a story about one child’s resilience in the face of dire circumstances. Janet’s plays for children ages 1-4 include Wake Up, Brother Bear, Mouse on the Move, and Mother Goose, all of which have gone on to be produced by other TYA’s. Under Janet’s leadership, Imagination Stage has become a leader in collaborating with international artists, creating, producing and touring plays for the Very Young in the Washington DC region.
