Janet Stanford has served as Artistic Director of Imagination Stage in Bethesda MD for over three decades. She has transitioned the company from a community-based arts organization to a nationally significant regional TYA theatre and arts education program, dedicated to youth development. In addition to commissioning dozens of US and international playwrights, Janet has written several musicals for Grades 1-5 and plays for the Very Young. These include Aladdin’s Luck and Sleeping Beauty: Time Traveler. Collaborations with The Washington Ballet led to two highly acclaimed Dance Theatre Musical adaptations: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe, and The Little Mermaid. Most recently, Janet worked with composer Timothy Guillot on Dickens’s Davy Copperfield, a story about one child’s resilience in the face of dire circumstances. Janet’s plays for children ages 1-4 include Wake Up, Brother Bear, Mouse on the Move, and Mother Goose, all of which have gone on to be produced by other TYA’sUnder Janet’s leadership, Imagination Stage has become a leader in collaborating with international artists, creating, producing and touring plays for the Very Young in the Washington DC region.
